Our misreading of the ferry times interfered with our schedule somewhat. Catching the 3.00pm ferry meant we didn't get to Swartz Bay until about 4.45pm and then had to drive into Vancouver city during peak hour traffic. The result of this was that we had no hope of returning the hire car by 5.oopm. So we decided to navigate to the hotel and return the car the next day.
The hotel reception staff were very helful and the concierge phoned around to see if we were able to drop off the car after hours and leave the key. Yes! We left our bags to be taken to our room and drove the 5 blocks to the Alamo car rental office. We were able to park the car and leave the keys and will go there tomorrow to finalise the account.
Once free of the car we checked out our room. A little cosy but all that we need.
We had a couple of drinks in the room then went in search of a place to eat, finding a Thai restaurant across the street. Delicious!
Update: Thursday morning
We walked to the car hire office to finalise the payment for the car. We weren't charged for an extra day as that was already covered in our timing.
