Our B&B hosts provided a lovely breakfast which we ate in the company of other guests. Back in the car we headed towards Vancouver to the port area of Tsawwassen where we would board the ferry to Vancouver Island. The drive took about two hours but we made perfect time so were able to have a look through the ferry terminal shops once we'd registered for the ferry and parked in the boarding queue. When the announcement to board came through we drove onto the ferry and then left our car to go upstairs to explore.
The ferry was like being back on the ship, with restaurants, a passenger lounge and a gift shop.
When we arrived on Vancouver Island we were surprised to learn that Victoria is quite a drive from where the ferry lands. We were glad we had decided to keep the car or travelling around the island would have proved to be difficult.
The first stop was Fisherman's Wharf to investigate a whale watching tour. We're booked on the morning trip for 4 hours. Recent trips have sighted orcas and humpback whales as well as other marine life so we're hoping to strike it lucky.
We located our hotel - Chateau Victoria - and checked in. We have two adjoining rooms for the next two nights.
Once we'd dropped off our bags we headed downtown to explore Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia. Our walk took us past the government buildings, through Chinatown and along the waterfront. We found a nice bar and restaurant for dinner, sitting outside beside a gas heater.
