What a magnificent day!
Juneau is the capital city of Alaska and is only accessible by air or sea. There are no roads in or or out of Juneau.
We were up early to be on the dock by 7.30am to join our tour to go Whale Watching and the Mendenhall Glacier. The bus took us to the dock to board the boat and we headed out into Favorite Channel in search of wildlife.
To begin with we saw some Harbor Seals and a Bald Eagle. But the true highlight of the day was the sighting of Humpback Whales! Not 1, not 2, but as many as 5 whales in a group and while on the water we would have seen more than 10 whales. Some were sleeping (logging) while others were just 'strolling' along, blowing huge spurts of water from their blow holes before arching their backs (humps) and raising their fluke to dive in search of food.
We also saw sea lions resting on a channel marker, enjoying the sunshine.
Although the wind is fresh, the sun is shining! Low cloud is covering the surrounding hills but it's a delightful day!
