Up a little earlier today - Kathy is our alarm clock. We have brekky included this morning (thanks Jenny) so enjoyed some delicious fare before we departed.
It's raining! That will make driving on the 'wrong ' side interesting!
Kathy was first driver, through drizzling rain as we passed various beautiful landscapes and occasional small houses by the road. The rivers would appear by the road now and then, all running down from surrounding mountains.
With limited towns along the way, lunch was at a roadhouse at Valemount.
The clouds were so low they floated at eye level between the mountains, which was a little surreal.
As we entered Jasper National Park we stopped at toll booth where we were charged a fee ($90) for staying at places within the park area.
The GPS struggled to find the address of our accommodation, so we parked in Jasper to get directions. The lady we spoke to was at a display of Jasper artists' work. She had lived in Australia in the late 70s, across from Biggera Waters State School. She had studied education at UQ and had worked as a relief teacher at local schools!
Following her directions we headed out of town, where a female elk crossed the road in front of us. It was then that we noticed a herd of elk by the road, which had caused about 20-30 vehicles to stop to observe them and take photos. We pulled up and went back for photos until the ranger moved them away from the road by firing pellets at them.
It's rutting season so the males are a bit antsy about their females and can become quite aggressive.
We found our accommodation, Pine Bungalows, which is a small cabin in the bush out of town. No WiFi, phones, TV, etc. Wild elk and bear live in the surrounding bush and can wander by. We're right by a large stream, with views of snow capped mountains.
